Buying Security Cameras? Look For These Helpful Features
Are you looking to add security cameras to your property but feel a bit confused about all the options out there? If so, you'll want to know some of the features to look out for.
Video Resolution
All cameras are not created equal when it comes to video resolution. You definitely want to pay attention to what the camera captures and if it is a high enough quality for you. A high-definition picture of 720p or 1080p should be enough to identify people that you see on camera, which is the whole purpose of having a security camera in the first place.
Field Of View
Look at what kind of field of view the camera provides, since you want it to be wide enough to see everything around it. If the field of view is too narrow, you can easily have blind spots that are not good for security reasons. Wide-angle lenses can be a great way to capture a lot of the surrounding area.
Night Vision
Night vision is crucial for any type of security camera. You should look into the video quality that the camera provides when using night vision to tell if it is usable. Night vision is not going to do you any good if the footage looks too grainy or dark. Try to find example photos online of what the night vision actually looks like.
Motion Detection
It is not very helpful to have a security camera that records 24/7 since you just want to see activity. This can be done with a motion detector that will start recording when something is within the camera's field of view. In addition, some cameras are able to identify people, pets, and cars to only alert you of what is important. You should also be able to set zones where motion will not set off an alert, such as when cars drive by on a street.
Storage
Every camera is going to have storage where the video is stored until you can review it. Know how much storage is provided and how to access that storage. You may need a separate storage device or you could get a camera that stores the footage in the camera itself or a camera that stores footage to the cloud. In addition, you may have to pay a monthly subscription fee for additional storage so that you can go back several days and look at footage.
